Few Florence questions!
We arrive in Pisa on Friday evening and are heading straight to Florence. We will be there for a long weekend. What are the must sees? We plan on heading back into Pisa early Monday morning to see the tower since we fly out at 1525. Is that ample time? Is there anywhere at the airport or train/bus station we can leave our luggage for a few hours? We are traveling with 2 teens. TIA!
Hi Janette -
Without knowing what sorts of things you're interested in it's difficult to recommend "must sees" but my own for Florence would be:
Duomo and Baptistry:

Galleria Uffizi (but you should purchase advance tickets; closed Mondays):
http://www.polomuseale.firenze.it/en/musei/?m=uffizi
Piazzale Michelangelo and San Miniato: fascinating old church and great view up there
Piazza della Signoria
Ponte Veccio - best place to admire the bridge is anywhere but ON the bridge! :O)
Piazza della Santissima Annunziata and church of same name (very close to Convento di San Marco)
Bargello National Museum -see website for closings:

Basilica Santa Croce:

Convento Di San Marco:

Much more to choose from but that's a start!
Check Rick Steve's book for luggage info since it's always there. My daughters liked the Bargello, Santa Croce and the Uffizi . I highly recommend San Marco. We all enjoyed climbing the steps of the Duomo and walking across Ponte Vecchio and then up to Piazzale Michelangelo .
Have fun!
You'd have to take an 8 minute bus from the Pisa train station to the airport and leave your luggage at the Information booth--cost 7 Euros each for storage. Then, you'd have to take a bus back into the city to the "leaning tower."
I was told there is a luggage storage by the train station.
Thank you for the info everyone
My husband isn't big into churches or art museums, but he does love sculpture and getting to explore the city. While we were in Florence, we included the following on our must-see list -
Climb the Campanile (the bell tower, rather than the dome) of the Duomo. I like climbing the Campanile better than the dome because the space isn't as claustrophobic and you get amazing views of the dome from the top of the bell tower. The interior of the baptistry is also worth a look (as well as the famous bronze doors, of course).
Piazzale Michelangelo and San Miniato (we took the bus up the hill and walked down). We packed a picnic of bread, cheese, prosciutto and wine and watched the sun set over the city.
Galleria dell'Accademia to see the Da Vinci's famous David statue as well as the "prisoners". Purchase tickets online in advance to avoid long lines.
Wander through the Mercato Centrale, Florence's famous food market (close to SMN train station). Great place for cheap panini and to shop for souvenirs (vendors will pack cheese, meat, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, etc. for shipping or for carrying home in your suitcase).
The Pitti Palace, Bargello, and the Capella dei Principi in San Lorenzo are some of my other favorite museums. Have a great trip!
I would leave my luggage at the hotel until It's time to leave and take the bus or train to Pisa.
I would ask my airline how long in advance I can register my luggage so that once registered I have at least an hour and 1/2 to go and see the tower.
The Basilica Santa Maria Novella and the Basilica Santa Croce are two fantastic churches. just amazing and must sees.
