PIN # for kiosk at train station in Italy

I noticed in watching the YouTube videos that the credit card machine is asking for a PIN #. Is this true as my credit cards do not have a PIN #. This would be at the kiosk at the train station. Any help appreciated.

You'll need to get a PIN from your banks. Normally that would only be for cash advances taken from an ATM, but someone just reported that they used that number at the Trenitalia kiosks and it worked fine.

We just returned from a 3 week trip, and YEP, you need a PIN#. We didn't have a PIN, so we simply used the neighboring "Cash Only" ticket machine.

susan,

ALL of my transactions at ticket Kiosks in Italy last September were processed using Chip & PIN. I'm not sure if any of them still operate using the old fashioned magnetic stripe, but based on the previous reply from Brian, it doesn't look like it.

Most people have been receiving their new credit cards with chips. US is moving to that technology, but signature only. A quick look in my wallet shows most now have chips plus the mag strip. So now you need a PIN from the provider.

Yes, but will U.S. based credit card companies even provide a pin? I called CapitolOne. They told me that they do not and instructed me "whatever you do, don't enter one or it will flag you're card*

I have one for my debit card but it is not chipped.....yet anyway.

I have Chase and they told me to just call the number on the back of my card to find out the PIN/change it.

Call and ask for your PIN. Every credit card has one, it is just not active until you receive it. Most card issuers will tell you it is only for Cash Advances, if they do just say OK. It will be mailed to you and takes about week to get to you.

I used my cash advance PINs on several different credit cards last year in Italy when the machines asked for it, never had a problem, never was actually charged as a cash advance.

Just never actually use the PIN to get a cash advance from an ATM except in extreme emergencies. The fees and interest can be brutal.

Terry, try contacting Capital One again. I used the Capital One chat function after log-in and they said they are mailing a PIN straightaway.

Do note that many banks will not give a PIN over the phone, but will only mail it to you, for security reasons (although mine can be changed over the phone, I had to get it initially by mail). So, call and ask for it to be mailed now rather than later.

I agree, call Capital One again. For some reason they advise against the first number being a zero though.
