I have 2 questions about 2 different parts of our trip. We will have a car for our 6 days in Pienza. I am trying to determine the best way to get from Pienza to Venice. Should we drive all the way to Venice or drop the car in between and take the train into Venice? Then, after Venice and Emilia Romagna we will drive to Ascoli Piceno to visit family. Our next stop after that will be Positano. Does anyone have recommendations on whether to drive into Naples or drop the car somewhere in between and take public transportation to Positano? Thanks in advance for your help!
I think it is really a matter of personal preference. I personally very much prefer train travel to driving in Italy, particularly for longer trips. So if I were planning my own trip, I would drop off the car as near to Pienza and Ascoli Piceno as I could, and take the train. I would do this even if the train were more expensive. Chiusi is a fairly quick drive from Pienza, and the big car rental companies have offices there, albeit with more limited hours than in the bigger cities. I don't have any specific recommendation for the second leg of your trip. However, I know people, and there are regular posters on this forum, who enjoy driving in Italy, and would tell you that since you already have the car, it would make sense to drive most of the way.
Mary Sue,
I would also prefer train to car. I will look into dropping the car in Chiusi. Hopefully, someone else will have some thoughts on the Ascoli to AC leg.
Thank you for your input!
