We want to stay in one place for 3 nights to use as a base in southern Tuscany to take in the Val d Orcia. (We will have 4 nights in Sienna later in our trip). We want a place large enough to have several good restaurants and nice town area to walk around in. We will also have a car. Any thoughts on the above towns would be appreciated.
We considered all 3 of those towns during our planning.
We originally settled on Pienza- seemed the most central, good restaurants, nice town for evening strolls and most lodging choices that were easily accessible by car for in/out day trips.
In the end we changed our plans for various reasons and will be staying outside Siena instead.
Pienza..
Have been to Pienza and Montalcino, I would spend more time in either but there was something about Montalcino (probably the wine)...it had a very welcoming atmosphere.
