Piemonte Region Town and Hotel Recommendations

I'm starting to sketch out a northern Italy trip for Late August into September. My wife and I will be renting a car so that we can explore the Langhe region before we make our way to Lake Garda. We've enjoyed our many trips to the Val D'orcia region around Pienza exploring wineries and restaurant/osterias and look forward to the same experience in Langhe. I've been looking for slightly upscale/boutique places to stay, but so far they seem to be out of the main Langhe region:

  • Villa La Madonna - Regione Madonna - about 50 minutes from Alba
  • Relais Le Due Matote - Bossolasco - about 30 minutes from Alba
  • Villa d'Amelia - Benevello - about 20 minutes from Alba

Are these places too far from the central Langhe area, assuming Alba is the center? We don't want to be too far away from towns that offer osterias and restaurants so that we are not traveling long distances in the evening after dinner. If too far, do you have a recommendation for a place to stay that is more central to the region? Has anyone stayed at any of these places and if so, how was your experience? Thanks in advance!

I personally prefer La Morra or Monforte d’Alba. Villa Beccaris in Monforte d’Alba is pretty special. You can walk to world class restaurants for dinner. This area is really easy to drive around the Piemonte wine villages.

We spent about five nights at VILLA LA FAVORITA, quick drive or a walk to Alba center.

I'd call it pretty upscale, but not at all luxury. Looks like rooms (they all vary) are well under 200 euro per night now. It's changed hands since we were there but reviews are very good.

We liked it, even though it rained the entire time we were there, in May!!

Those roads are very easy to drive...
I'd choose my restaurants and then decide where to stay....

Thanks Eksrunchy and April! Do you have any osteria/restaurant recommendations? While we're not opposed to a Michelin star experience, a family run osteria is more our liking. While we're at it, if you have any recommendation of small-run wineries for tastings or pairing experiences I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!

Oh, you are most welcome!

My trip was in 2009 but most of the restaurants are still going strong, except for the one in Treiso.
I especially loved TRATTORIA DELLA POSTA; it's listed in Michelin but has no stars. It's a little elegant but very cozy and prices seemed pretty moderate.

I wrote a trip report on Fodor's about that week; we were invited as guests of a winery which I would recommend: Macarini. We spent a night there but yo could just visit. We were also guests at another winery that I mentioned in the trip report, PODERE COLLA. Recommended!!

It's a really lovely part of Italy, and very easy to drive around. I'd go back, but there are so many regions that I need to visit first, and I've been concentrating on the south/Sicily in recent years..

WOW! That's some trip report - I'll have to read through it a few times :) La Favorita does not have an availability calendar so I'll reach out to them. Villa Beccaris has limited availability for our dates, but not giving up on them either. The wineries looked interesting and I'll keep reading your post about restaurants. I hope April has some restaurant recommendations in Monforte d’Alba as well!

La Torricella https://www.latorricella.eu/it/ is a short drive from town and is an agriturismo. We went here one night for dinner while we stayed at Villa Beccaris. It was fantastic, farm to table food.

https://www.saracca.com/index.html Is a unique experience in the actual restaurant interior. It’s an adventure and I would recommend the higher floors if you’re physically impaired. The food is excellent.

https://www.osteriadeicatari.com/ Is classic Piedmontese food that goes perfectly with the wine in the area.

The truth is, you’re not going to go wrong with the food anywhere in this area.

I highly recommend a wine tour for a day with Anna or her husband Claudio from https://www.italianna.com/
It’s more than a wine tour. It’s the start of a friendship. They are the best!

While doing a self-guided bike ride through Piemonte in 2013, my wife and I stayed at both Villa d'Amelia and Beccaris and both were outstanding. d'Amelia also has a wonderful restaurant. We went back to the area in 2023 and stayed at La Torricella for a week. We were in one of their three apartments down the hill from the main building and had a kitchen, patio, and shared swimming pool. We ate twice in their restaurant and enjoyed the food and gorgeous views. Though they make their own wine, the restaurant also has an amazing wine list of other producers in the area. Other restaurants we enjoyed include Bovio in La Morra, the Castle in Grizane Cavour, and Felicin in Monforte d'Alba. Some of these had Michelin stars when we visited and all need advance reservations. We also had tasting and a four course lunch at Marchesi di Barolo which was fantastic. Enjoy!

Thanks Larry for the recommendations. I'm trying to sort the puzzle out at this late date so having options helps.

Once again, many thanks to all.
