Piedmont: Wine Buying (and best place to make "home base")

We are driving down to Piedmont in May and are trying to find the best town to be our "home base" for the week?

For reference - when recently in Champagne, France, we stayed in Pierry and then Hautvillers - both of which allowed us to just walk throughout the villages to try several wineries each day.

I know that Barolo, Barbaresco, etc are all very spread out throughout the hills...so, any recommendations on a village that will allow walking to wineries? Or will Enotecas be our only option in "walking" distance?
Or - recommendations for biking between wineries?
I am trying to avoid having to book a driver for multiple days.
We are interested in small producers...not looking to hit "big" names. Specifically, deep, heavy reds. Not interested in Asti/Spumante.
Any/all suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks!

I do not drink wine, but I travelled across Piedmont quite extensively.

My suggestion is renting a car, setting your base in Turin. Most destinations are within a two hours drive from the city.

As an example Alba (the famous truffle town) is a mere 60 km drive from Turin.
