Piedmont vs. Dolomites

We are planning several weeks in fall of 2016 and have one week unplanned. Trying to decide between Turin and Piedmont wine country or Dolomites; perhaps even Switzerland for a couple of days. We will be coming from Varenna on Lake Como and after our unplanned week, we will have 2 weeks in Tuscany. We have been to the high spots before so want to see a different region, perhaps some mountain scenery. Rick Steves does not have anything on Piedmont, but Frommers has enticing write up on that region. Hard to tell from readin guidebooks if we would enjoy Piedmont or Dolomites more. Thanks for any ideas!

It's a matter of personal preference. First of all you don't say if you will rent a car. Either you visit Piedmont or the Dolomites, I recommend a car.
Coming from Varenna however, I would drive through the Stelvio pass into Merano and eventually the Dolomites. If you are interested in wine, all of Italy produces it. The Valpolicella is near Verona and the Ferrari ( Italy's answer to Champagne) is based in Trento.
