Piedmont, Lake Como, Liguria

We've got 9 days and we are driving, flying into Milan. Planning on spending 2 days on Lake Maggiore then 2 days in Bellagio. Then planning on heading down to Lavagna or Sestri Levante not sure if it matters? Just using it as a base to head down to Portofino and maybe take the boat over to Portovenere. Then heading up to the Piedmont region to do some wine tasting in Barolo. Then heading back to Milan for an evening before we head back.

Three Questions:

1) Do you think it's a smarter drive to go to Barolo before the Liguria area, seems like the same driving time?

2) Lavagna or Sestri Levante for a base in Liguria?

3) I can't seem to find a good wine route. I would like to stay in Barolo one night and then somewhere else on the wine route but not sure where? We don't like barbaresco wines but would like to try some of the drier whites.

It seems like you could choose any, based on personal preference. In Liguria, I can only say that I prefer Santa Margarita to Genoa, and loved Portofino.
Milan is a great place to spend a night. I was there last month for one night and if I had had 2 nights I would be enjoyed that too.
Re: Lake Como, we took a train from Milan to Varenna and stayed 3 days, one of the days we went to Bellagio. You do not need a car at Lake Como, so if I were you I would arrive Milan and train to Lake Como, then train back to Milan (since its on the way) and pick up the car for the rest of the trip.
