Hi - My wife and I are going to Piedmont the end of May for 3 days (before a wedding in Lake Como area) and we have narrowed down our choice of places to stay to the three below. They are spread out from the east to the west just south of the A33. Art Suites in La Morra Cantina Rizzi near Treiso Al Cardinal Mazzarino in Cherasco I have a couple of questions: Which on of these three do people recommend? Is there a section of Piedmont that is better to stay in for wine and food and if so where?
Vineyard recommendations? Also, after the wedding we are heading to Venice and stopping along the way in the Verona area and are looking for recommendations for a place to stay (both in Verona and Venice). Thanks for the help! Eric
My husband and I stayed in Verona at Hotel Aurora and loved it. Our room was very large and overlooked Piazza Erbe. Breakfast in the morning was wonderful - sat out on the veranda, again overlooking the Piazza. The staff was amazing, both during the reservation process and our stay. Highly recommend it.
I don't know anything about those specific B&Bs, but can offer opinions on the area. When we visited the Piedmont (which I loved!), we stayed in Monforte d'Alba, in a unique and wonderful B&B, Le Case della Saracca. I loved the town; several places to eat within walking distance (Giardino della Felicin), plus a lovely place right outside town (Trattoria della Posta). And a great little bar, the Barolo Bar, right off the main piazza with lovely complimentary antipasti. As you can tell, I'm partial to this town and to that B&B. Since our visit, the owner, Guilio Perin, has opened a wine bar as well; he was just finishing it when we were there. He's friendly and very helpful - he made our dinner reservations, gave recommendations, and also recommended and arranged for us tours at two local vineyards, where he knows the owners: Podere Rocche dei Manzoni and Podere Ruggeri Corsini. I really enjoyed those, as well. The wine and food is fabulous all over; as you may already know, La Morra is one of the Barolo towns, as is Monforte d'Alba; Cherasco and Treiso are not. Treiso is known for its Barbaresco. But if you're a lover of Barolo, you might want to stay more in the Barolo area. La Morra, BTW, is tiny. Beautiful views, but I don't recall how many restaurants are in the town. Near Treiso is La Ciau del Tornavento, where we had a fabulous meal. It was my favorite in the Piedmont; Trattoria della Posta was probably my second-favorite. Keep in mind Italy's strict drinking and driving laws when thinking about where to stay and eat.
My husband and I have stayed at Cantina Rizzi twice. We love it. It is about five minutes (or less) away from Treiso which has three good restaurants and other good restaurants are also close by. It is very near Alba, Barolo, and Barbaresco. We haven't stayed at the other two places but I can heartily recommend Cantina Rizzi.
