Pick my Adventure: Vesuvius by Horseback or Pompei

I will be traveling from Naples to Sorrento this fall. My resort checkin in Sorrento starts at 2 pm, so I thought it would be a good day to do a stopover on the way for some sightseeing.

My initial gut reaction was to tour Pompei. Obviously, a thorough exploration of Pompei would take several hours, so I would probably do a more abbreviated look-see. But, it would still probably be worth it.

Then, a couple of weeks later, my mind went to Vesuvius. The chance to hike up to an active volcano is intriguing. So, I thought maybe a Vesuvius/Herculaneum combo might be more my thing. But, the logistics on what to do with my luggage in the meantime was a bit daunting. I'm under the understanding the storage at Herculaneum is a pretty significant walk from the station, and an uphill walk back.

Now, the luggage may not even be a thing, because I am considering storing my luggage in Naples, and just traveling to Sorrento with a backpack.

The most recent option that has struck my fancy is a Vesuvius on Horseback tour. It gets rave reviews. It doesn't go all the way up, but rather just part of the way, amongst the vineyards. The part the speaks to me is just the uniqueness of it. It's something a bit different. My only issue is it does start early so it's an earlier morning than I would prefer.

Pompeii, absolutely.
However, during a NatGeo trip to Patagonia years ago, we were offered the opportunity to do a 90 minute trail ride, accompanied by Gauchos, in view of the Andies. I said yes, though I had never ridden a horse. No reqrets, but the alternative was hanging out at the lodge.
