Piazzale Roma to Hotel Pensione Guerrato

We are on the last leg of our trip. In a couple of days we are driving into Venice (from Ortisei) and dropping our rental car off at Piazzale Roma. What's the best (most convenient and least expensive) way to get from Piazzale Roma to Hotel Pensione Guerrato? We don't have a lot of luggage (carry-on only) but if we could avoid a long walk, it would be nice.

Terry,
Walk across the street, towards the Grand Canal, go to the vaporetto ticket office and purchase tickets. You didn't say how long you will be staying at Pensione Guerrato but it would probably be beneficial to purchase a vaporetto pass which could be valid for 1,2,3, or 7 days...your choice. A single ticket is 7 euros.

After purchasing the ticket / pass of your choice board the No. 1 vaporetto and ride it down to the Mercato Rialto stop. Once you exit the vaporetto, walk through the archway, turn right, go a couple of small streets(probably about 75yds.) turn left and look for their sign.
Enjoy your time in Venice,
Gene K.

Gene,

Thank you so much for your detail rich answer. It is just what I had hoped for. After driving for several hours just to get there, it really helps to have all the details worked out when you are arriving in a new place.

My best to you.

From Piazzale Roma take be sure to take vap. # 1 (the "slow" boat that stops at every stop) to the Mercato (or Rialto Mercato) stop. The # 2 vap. does not stop at the Mercato. Your stop will be on the "right" side of the canal and is the stop after Ca' d Oro which is on the "left" side of the canal. Do not go all the way to Rialto Bridge -- you will have cross over the bridge an have a longer walk to the hotel.

After going through the archway mentioned before, you will be in a small plaza. Turn right and walk straight. If there are a lot of vendors in the walking area, be sure they are all on your right side so you do not miss the next turn. Before you get to the place where the building juts out in front of you, turn left on a small street named Calle drio la Scimia and look for the hotel sign on the left.

If you go to bing.com and use the map feature you can get very good aerial photos of the P. Roma area and vap. stop location. If you go to googlemaps.com, you can get not only aerial photos, but street level views as well so you can virtually walk the route before you get there. Takes a bit of experimentation to get the hang of it, but it is great for getting the lay of the land.

Terry, as you leave Ortisei, if you are up for a beautiful drive with lots of twisty mountain hairpin turns, as opposed to the easy one (down the A22 to Verona, then over to Venice) head out through the Val Gardena pass and follow the roads towards the A27. (I can't remember which ones our GPS took us down.). The scenery is spectacular, but the driving can be challenging with bikes, tour busses, sharp turns and beautiful views. But, if that is not for you, you have seen spectacular scenery in Ortisei, and the drive down the A22 is pretty nice, too.

va from va,

We would love to drive the back roads and it was our plan. While hiking we met a couple that vacation here all the time and found out that there is a huge "Hero" bike race in Selva this weekend and they are closing all the roads on that side of Val Gardena starting Friday morning. As much as I would have liked to drive the scenic way, it looks like we have to drive via the A22 interstate.
