I can't remember the name of this piazza in Florence! I'm trying to tell a friend who is going not to miss it and I'm stumped!
Piazza Michelangelo (did I win??)
Hi, Monique -- yes, that is the Large Piazza up on the hill.........but I thought there was another one down in the city center...........mmm maybe I'm confused. I just remember opera singers, street musicians, beautiful lights -- nice to drink wine and just breathe in Florence
I think are a couple of fake "Davids" in the city. The one in Piazza Michelangelo is like green with age isn't it? There was one near Uffitzi Gallery too (is that Palazzo Vecchio?). They kept faking me out.
It's called the Piazza della Signoria and there are several other statues there as well.
It's the Piazza della Signoria, which is next to the Palazzo Vecchio.
If you're thinking of the one on the hill, it's Piazzale Michelangelo. Beside's the statue, there's a great view of Florence and you can also walk to San Mineato church from there.
They are not exactly "fake" Davids; they are authorized copies that were made to withstand the elements and stay outside when the original marble sculpture was moved inside.
RE Fake Davids -- A college student took me on a night tour, and he said THEY called it the piazza with the "fake David." The original David is in the Academia, I know. I was just using the term as a land mark for someone who could remember the piazza name which I cannot three years later. I wanted to make sure a friend who is going next month would be sure to see this piazza at night.
Thank you to everyone who responded to my post!
Yes I refer to them as "fake" Davids as well just because "officially commissioned replicas" takes to long to say :-)
While in Florence you can see the actual statue of David at the Academia Museo. If you don't get tickets beforehand, plan on a long wait in line.
The exact duplicate to the statue of David in the Accademia is at the front entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio located in the Piazza della Signoria and stands where the original once stood.
Thanks Everyone!!! Now my friend won't miss the wonderful experience of this beautiful piazza [INVALID] she already knows to see the "real David" in the Accademia! Grazie e mille!
"The exact duplicate to the statue of David in the Accademia is at the front entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio located in the Piazza della Signoria and stands where the original once stood. " If that's suppose to be an "exact duplicate".... I think they need to work on the copying skill. IMHO it was a "sad imitation" I really looked at it and thought "what's all the fuss about" until I saw the REAL thing! No comparison!
I agree with Carol from ATL. On their own, the "fake David" statues are definately a work of art, but compared to the original in Accademia, they look malnourished and sickly (IMO). But that makes me appreciate the orignial even more. Expecting it to be overrated, I literally gasped in awe with I turned that corner in Accademia and saw it hovering above the crowd. Bravo Michelangelo, bravo!
