We are a group of 4 women (50’s/60’s) looking for accommodations for 2 nights in Florence (Piazza Della Signoria area) both before and after our trip to a villa near Montelpuciano. Apartment or hotel is fine as long as we each have our own beds with at least 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. $100/night per person price range. Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Mary Ann
Look at booking.com
Use the filters for location , number beds, budget etc
There will be hotels as well as apartments
You may need to increase your budget a bit
Thanks Christine. I should have mentioned I already did that. I find some hotels that will change a king to 2 twins but in the pictures they look like they are only a few inches apart! I would love to find rooms that are furnished with 2 double beds. None of the sites give me the option to search for that specifically.
Rooms with two double (or larger) beds are not very common in moderately-priced or budget hotels in Europe. Real estate costs more there, so hotel rooms tend to be small unless you're paying considerably more than you are proposing to spend.
Indeed, the two beds in a twin-bedded room are usually very close together. There may also be very limited floor space for a suitcase (and no more than one luggage rack). Bathrooms are very often tiny, with showers so small that if you drop your soap, you'll have difficulty picking it up.
Because so many lodgings are in repurposed buildings, rooms tend to be quirky rather than standardized. You usually cannot count on being assigned the precise room you see pictured on a hotel's website even if you find one that looks ideal. Fancy/upscale/boutique hotels may be exceptions. I don't paddle in that pool.
We stayed at Relaise Piazza Signoria, like an apartment hotel. (Three times) Looks like they can set bed up for 2 twins. The classic room with a view would work if the you reserved 2 apartments on the same floor. Not sure of dates but could be within your budget.
There are lots of options depending on what you want. I have done hotels, apartments and a few hybrid arrangements there. Last time, we did the Pontevecchio Relais (fantastic location right on the Arno, steps away from Ponte Vecchio). The room was beautiful, but we should have checked that there was no breakfast option (easy to step out for the morning cappuccino, but still). They also use multiple locations in the area, so it's not like a typical, self-contained hotel. But it was lovely.
Other times, I've rented flats closer to the Duomo, which was perfect. A lot of the choices will depend on your mobility, flexibility on services and, of course, budget (at the highest end, if you can wander one day into the lobby of the 4 Seasons, do it!). On earlier visits, long past, I've done the more historic or charming-type pensiones/B&Bs... they can be great, but I find now that I prefer a modern bathroom over a quaint one... :-D
Good luck - oh, and whatever you do, try to avoid the loud patio restaurants right on the Piazza. Very expensive and you will get much better food going back a street or two. But do try the rooftop café at the Uffizi Gallery - gorgeous!
