I plan to use this town as a base to cover the archeological sites. Any suggestions on hotels?
Will you have a car?
Last spring, we greatly enjoyed staying at B&B La Casa sulla Collina d'Oro in Piazza Armerina. It is in the town, but across a little valley from the old part of town, so you get a nice view of that hilltop. Great breakfast, nice hosts, family-run place. not fancy. My impression from the reviews is that some rooms are better than others, so it's worth checking on that.
The town was extremely quiet in mid-April, didn't seem to be quite "open" yet, but we drove in twice to eat at La Locanda --- our kind of place, but with very mixed online reviews, just like many other places we've enjoyed eating at in Italy.
Really, really worth it to get to the Villa Romana when it opens.
We stayed for three nights at B&B L'Angelica - the host is a chef and provides a wonderful breakfast, and for a nominal price, fantastic multi-course dinners. It is right in the town. At least in 2022 there were few tourists as most people just pass through to see the mosaics. It was relaxing to be among the regular residents, especially in contrast to struggling through the crowds around our accomodations in Rome, or in Taormina.
There is a wonderful agriturismo called Villa Trigona near Piazza Armerina. I was there last month with a tour group, so I don’t know about prices or arrangements for independent travelers, but there were some Italian travelers dining and/or staying there as well as us. I think you would need a car although it’s close to both the town and the Roman villa.
