Photography of Cinque Terre

I am a landscape photographer and I will be in the Cinque Terre area this fall. Which town is the most photographed out of the five towns of CT?

Pietro, I've never given any thought to that question, but I suspect that all of the towns are well photographed. My "guess" is that Riomaggiore and Vernazza probably get a bit more attention than the other towns. There are good views of Vernazza from both sides of the trails (ie: Monterosso side and Corniglia side). Those seem to be the "classic" views of Vernazza. More close-up views of the towns are a bit "different" at the moment, as flood repair is still ongoing. Riomaggiore seems to be popular also, especially views of the pastel-coloured buildings taken from the harbour. You can see some examples on This Website. Are you planning to pack along a Tripod? The other useful accessory I've found for shooting in that area is a Circular Polarizer. Happy Shooting!

Pietro,
My wife and I will be hiking the Cinque Terre next month. I will post here how it goes. I'll give some input as to the restoration efforts after last years devestating floods. I'll try to let you know about photo shoot points of interest, too. Good luck. Autumn light might make this spectacular area appear more spectacular!

I would guess that Riomaggiore might be the town with the most able to be captured in pictures. Riomaggiore is the 2nd largest town. Monterosso is quite flat and you really don't get all of the hills. In a boat offshore (or a hoptyclopter), you can really capture most of Riomaggiore. I have several pictures and the ones of Riomaggiore are the most scenic and representative of the CT in my opinion.

Pietro, My wife and I were just in the Cinque Terre on Rick Steves' Heart of Italy tour. We found Manarola to be the most picturesque with a dramatic harbor. Not sure if it's the most photographed but we visited all 5 towns and thought it was the most photogenic. If you visit Manarola try to use Rick's advise and directions in his Italy book about taking the hiking trail along the vineyards on the hillside above Manarola. Our photographs from this area are some of the best from our Italy tour.
The Via dell'Amore (the Love Walk or the Lover's Walk) between Manarola and Riomaggiore is also a great location for photographs. Enjoy your trip !

Manarola is the one chosen for a cover photo by National Geographic Travel magazine to represent Cinque Terre.
