Photography and/or journaling?

Last year on our first trip to Italy, both my husband and I had cameras and took hundreds and hundreds of photos- like many of you surely do. Although every night I wrote a brief summary of places visited, once I uploaded the photos it was a real challenge remembering every shot. Some of you may or may not be like me, but I painstakingly write captions for every photo and want them to be accurate. "Was this near Piazza Navona?, What's the name of this little-known church we stumbled upon?". I actually went on Google Earth and traced back our steps just so I could discover, for instance, that the place with the sculpture-adorned courtyard near Fontana della Tartarugha wasn't just a random building we peeked into, but it is named Palazzo Mattei. Sure, sometimes a beautiful door is just that, and a picturesque street does need to be labeled, but... my question: other than taking notes of every shot we take (and until they invent a digital camera with voice recorder for every shot!), how do you keep track?

Thanks, photography enthusiasts and everyone!

Check the thread on this same page called "Digital Photos" (posted by Gina). You'll find some good ideas about how to manage all those photos. :-)

That's one of the reasons I always get a DK Eyewitness guide book of the countries we visit. It has excellent pictures and that has often helped me to identify what's on the picture.

Another option is to consciously take pictures of signage at the sites you visit. Only to help you providing the material for the captions. You don't need to keep these photos for eternity and can delete them as soon as you are finished with the captions.

I posted some of the ways we keep track of our pictures under the earlier digital question but forgot one things. Most hotels have a pad of maps. At the end of each day we will take one of those maps and highlighter to mark our path for the day espeically we have done a lot of walking. Will photo the map so that we have a record of where we were that day. Helps to tie the photos in.
