I know it's been mentioned before, but I just want to confirm that it's okay to plug our phone chargers into Europe sockets, with a plug adaptor of course. I ordered an adaptor that has a place for a plug and also a USB port. Could I plug my charger cord into the USB port?
Yes, that's all.
I am in Rome and that is what I am using now. An inexpensive adaptor and a dual USB plug and it works just fine!
Although the electrical outlet is likely a different voltage from the U.S., USB ports are governed by a common standard and should be the same wherever you go, no matter what the underlying input voltage is to the USB charging port. Although USB ports can have different levels of power so that some can charge a laptop versus a phone, they are supposed to deliver different levels based on what your device needs or can take. At least that is how I understand things.
To see if your charger or device will work at a different voltage, look for it to have printed somewhere something along the lines of "Input: 100-240 V." Most electronic devices these days are built to work in multiple countries (big exception: hair dryers).
mlw,
It's very likely that the charger for your phone is designed to operate with input voltages from 100-240 VAC. However it's always a good idea to verify that. Look for a small "nameplate" somewhere on the charger, perhaps on the bottom and the words "Input Voltage". You may need a magnifying glass to see it clearly.
The charger will be designed to provide the standard 5 VDC USB output regardless of the input voltage, at the appropriate current for the device. Chargers for phones can deliver enough current to charge the phones they're intended for, but may not have enough current to power an iPad or larger device. There are good quality "universal chargers" from several after market companies that can power both phones and larger devices.
I always prefer to use either the charger supplied with my phone or a good quality substitute, especially when travelling. I won't use cheap models as in my experience they're more likely to fail (which can severely damage the phone).
We smoked my daughters hand held gaming thingy charger on a European outlet, so do read the label.
