My son and I are going to Europe and say we split up for an afternoon, etc. what is the best way if we need to immediately call each other? We are taking iphones but will have the roaming turned off. Thanks

You might consider buying a pair of inexpensive cell phones in Italy. I got one at the TIM store at the airport in Milan for 29 euro, plus about 10 euro in minutes. There is no charge for incoming calls, so only one of you will be paying for the phone call. You can also text.

Zoe, did you buy the TIM phone and/or sim card at the Malpensa airport? All the other previous posts on that issue indicates that there is NO Tim store at Malpensa. And, in fact, other messages on this topic say that you can only buy a sim card in the departures area, past security. So, if you are arriving in Italy, you can't buy a sim card at the airport. Please update us on that, as other persons posting messages on this topic have contradictory information. I bought an unlocked GSM phone on eBay before leaving for Milan in Nov. 2010, then went to a TIM store in the city to get the sim card. But I'd love to be able to get it at the airport instead.
