My wife and I will be visiting Siena, Italy in early May. My wife has allergies to animals. We are looking for a good hotel that is pet-free. So far, any hotel we have looked at online allows pets. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Just because they allow pets, doesn't mean that actually lots of people stay in hotel rooms with pets. Also Italian floors don't have floor to floor carpeting (only tiles and rarely wood floors), therefore they may not be as full of hidden dog hairs etc. In any case, call the hotels, tell them the situation and they'll let you know about possible arrangements, since even hotels that allow pets don't necessarily let you use all rooms with a pet.
Consider however that dogs and cats are just as common as they are in North America, therefore it's possible that the hotel/B&B owners may have a dog or cat roaming around on the hotel grounds, even if not allowed in the rooms. So inquire about that too.
Thanks for the advice. We will inquire.
I take the same approach I use in the US. I've never had a problem at very small hotels, B and Bs, and convents/monasteries; these types of properties are better able to control what comes in the front door. At large hotels, I've found it can be more hit and miss, regardless of stated policy re pets: Some folks sneak pets in--which I generally don't realize until nighttime, as I'm trying to fall asleep and realize that the last occupant had "fluffy" in bed with them.
