We will be driving from Bari to Rome. Looks like one of the routes is via Pescara. Any tips on visiting the Pescara region? Also, looks like the route between Pescara and Rome goes over the mountains through the region that has had many earthquakes over the past several years. Any difficulty driving this way? Thank you.
I can't describe the city of Pescara (the region is Abruzzo), since I don't know it.
The drive through the mountains is on a not too curvy 4 lane freeway where the speed limit is 130km/h, or 80mph, unless otherwise posted. The difficulty could be driving there in winter, as at times, like this past month, the area has some major snow falls and icy conditions (the highest peaks of the Appenines are there). The freeway however goes through the valleys at lower altitude so it's less affected by weather. If you drive in summer, nothing to worry, just enjoy the mountain views.
Becky, I've traveled through that area for several years in summer. as Roberto said, beautiful views. Lots of great towns to stop in.
Will you already have visited the Gargano Peninsula?
Yes, we did visit the Gargano Peninsula. It was beautiful. Zoe, which towns along the way do you recommend visting?
Beginning from Bari, some of the coastal towns are interesting (Trani, for example). I would drive to Castel del Monte, near Andria, to see the castle, then to Matera (in Basilicata). Another worthwhile stop if it interests you is Cassino, home of the Abbey of Montecassino. Are you planning to do this drive in one day?
