Our trip is Rome FCO , train to Orvieto for 4 days, train to Perugia 3 days, picking up car in Perugia to travel to LaMarche Tavola Cooking School. for week long stay. Car necessary to reach them.
We have 4 days after checking out of Marche to reach Campomaggiore, visiting family for a week. My question is, should we continue to drive south to Bari , on to Campomaggiore, or train down to Bari and rent another car for Campomaggiore. Hate to loose so much time driving but can't seem to figure out the best route. What to see, where to stay. Concerned for beach crowds on vacation. Your thoughts are appreciated. BTW first time driving in Italy.
We drove up the coast north of Bari towards LeMarche and stayed at a wonderful country house, Masseria Grande in Montecilfone, inland from Termoli. The area had several agriturismos. Southern LeMarche has places worth visiting and it makes sense to keep your car so you can get to out of the way places.
How about Abruzzo? Assuming this is a summer trip? If so, the beaches are very crowded, especially in July and August. No crowds to speak of, delightful mountains. Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso is lovely, near L'Aquila. You could spend a night or two in the Albergo Diffuso in Santo Stefano di Sassanio then maybe Sulmona. A car is certainly necessary in these parts.
