Perugia or Assisi for home base to visit Umbria.

We plan 5 or 6 nights in Umbria to explore several cities and towns. Perugia seems to be centrally located for rail travel, but the train station is about a mile from the city center and up hill.
Assisi would be better regarding the walk back from a day's touring, but it is not as centrally located.

Any suggestions or advice from those who have used those two cities as a base for exploring?

Perugia is a good base and worth visiting. The train station is more easily accessible than you think. There is an escalator/people mover that takes you up the hill to the center.. I don't remember any difficulty with a rolling suitcase. Here is a link that describes where and how to find the escaltor system:

A taxi is another option.

There is also an easily accessible bus station which is useful for some day trips like to the charming and historical town of Gubbio.
