Perugia advice needed

Hi, everyone!

My family and I will be staying in perugia in June for 2 nights. Initially, we were going to rent a car to drive from Rome to Perugia. but we decided last minute that we were a bit nervous about driving, so have decided not to rent a car. Our hotel is outside the city center, but it is near a bus stop, though, and that looks reasonable to get us to the city center.

question 1: what is the best way to get from Rome to Perugia? I was looking at DayTrip, and, while not cheap (at all!) it would pick us up at our hotel and drop us off at our hotel in Perugia, and we could add some sightseeing stops along the way. In reviewing trains, it looks like it would take ~ 3-4 hours and we would have to change trains. we also would get off the train near the city center, so would not be convenient to go to our hotel to deposit our luggage. I did look at Flixbus as well, but it has some pretty awful reviews. there is also something called BlaBla car, but that looks slightly questionable, and I'm not sure the drivers are vetted. but it is pretty cheap as well.

question 2: is the public bus system in Perugia reliable?

thanks everyone! Perugia looks like a great city to explore, and one that is a bit lesser known

There’s a 7:43 train that is direct and you will arrive in Perugia at 10:57. Then you can take a taxi to your lodging. I know that’s early, but you have a short time in Perugia, so this will give you a decent day & a half.

In case it helps, Perugia has the mini-metro above ground transportation from the train station up, up into the center of the city.

Be sure to walk through the underground section - look it up, so you know the history & what you’re seeing! And some of the gelato shops will put a Baci topping on the gelato - yum!

I would definitely take the train. With that said, I’ve used flixbus a few times and it’s fine. I’ve used blah blah twice and both rides were fine but prefer not to use unless it’ll save several hours. I wouldn’t use it for a family trip. From Rome to Perugia, go with the train.

I stayed in the Perugia historic center. I used what they call the mini metro a few times to go from the train station to the historic center. It comes every few minutes, it’s great. Didn’t use the buses.

I would stay in the city center, change your hotel if you can.

I agree completely with Marco. Try to change your lodging to stay in the city center, so you’re not wasting time with buses and able to walk around the city in the evening & enjoy the restaurants.

I stayed at Locanda della Posta Boutique Hotel., and it was extremely convenient for everything I did in Perugia, plus it’s a very nice hotel.

Thanks. I definitely will look into changing the hotel. We initially made the hotel reservation based on having a car. But now that we won't, I'll see if we can change it.

I have taken Flixbus all around Europe and love it. Leaving for Europe in April and more trips by Flix than trains. I leave Rome for Perugia on April 13 by Flix. This was a better time for me than the train and have been to Perugia before so don't have to rush to fit everything in. Anything you would like me to check on while I am there?

We've stayed in Perugia a few times over the years and think it's a wonderful town to visit. Not to belabor the point but it's a hill town so all the places of interest for a tourist are up on the hill, although there is a good portion of the town down in the flats. It's easy to get up to the hilltop from the train station, or down to the station to visit nearby towns such as Assisi. Being able to stroll around the shops and sites on the hilltop means it's the place to stay. What hotel do you currently have reserved so we can see where it is in regards to the top of the town?

we will be staying at relais dell olmo. it made sense to book this when we were planning on renting a car. it has free parking, and I did not want to try and drive in the heart of the city itself, because of all the restrictions. And there are several parking lots available near the city center, with escalators up to the top, so it seemed like it would be fine.

I do think I will try and cancel our hotel if I can get one that is in the city center.

when I look at the trenitalia website, several of the times are unavailable for purchase due to planned line works, so I'm a little worried that there is going to be construction and trains may be less available. I may look more into flixbus. or, since we are saving money on not renting a car, maybe I'll just splurge and go with DayTrip!
