My hubby thinks we should hire a guide for our fam of 4 to see the major sites in Rome. He read something about jumping
the lines this way. Is this true and worth it?
thanks
Frankie, a private guide JUST for your family would be extremely expensive. You might consider a quality small-group tour instead? "Walks of Italy" is very well regarded by RS posters who've used them, and you might look at this tour?

This one as well:

They have individual tours of just the Vatican Museums/Basilica and Colosseum/forum/Palatine as well so take a look at the websites.
You need to take the ages of the members of your family into consideration? For instance, if you are traveling with young children, both of these day-long tours would be difficult for them. Same for seniors with some mobility challenges as covering the amount of ground on the itineraries will take some stamina.
That said, there are other ways of skipping ticket lines (NO one skips security checks), if that's all you're trying to do, but I understand the convenience of having ticketing/reservations taken care of for you.
It can be efficient and economical for some sites. I recommend a private tour of the Coloseo/Palatino/Foro Romano as your family will get more out of this area with a 4 hour tour than on large group tour, and for 4 people, a private guide will cost less than 4 tickets on a smaller group tour. For example, Walks of Italy for a 3 hour tour is about $65 per person. A guide should be about $60-65 per hour so for four people, a savings PLUS a better experience, IMO.
I recommend Sonia Tavoletta. Have toured with her myself and referred many of our friends and family. Contact her at [email protected]. She also tours the Vatican and other sites, so tell her what interests you and let her design a tour or even a full day.
Thanks to you both. I will consider these options.
I had a private guide in Rome on my last visit, and she was wonderful. She spent all day with us and helped us navigate public transportation. We told her what we wanted to see, and she made it happen. Her business on facebook is "About Rome - Best Walking Tours with Micaela.
I enjoy private guided tours but they are so costly, Im now looking into small group tours, which seems like the same thing more or less
If you have time to research, and get Skip the Line tix in advance for some of the more important attractions, I think Rome is best handled on your own. It's an unbelievable city to wander in. We got the bus/Metro weekly pass and would almost try to get lost. With my trusty Streetwise laminated Rome street map it was pretty much impossible, but there were gems to be seen at every turn. Why see what someone else wants you to see?
Enjoy your planning!
