Trying to pick among all the beautiful websites and reviews. Trying to stay under 150 per night.... Will pay for balcony view. I'm having the most trouble judging location. We don't mind walking at all, but would rather not have to pay for taxi to get to train/boats each time we head out to explore. Or .... is that just the way it is? If so I've been looking at the Settimo Cielo. Thanks in advance !!
We just stayed at Hotel Settimo Cielo in July. The rooms have balconies overlooking the bay, there's a pool, and parking. The hotel in general is a bit tired, the breakfast mediocre, and the rooms while clean and comfortable are more spartan than the pictures suggest, but it's in your price range and quite a bit cheaper than the hotels immediately adjacent. It's about a 10 minute walk into town. The balcony and view more than make up for the shortcomings. I'd stay there again.
You will find Google Maps extremely helpful in planning your European vacation. Click the pedestrian icon for walking times.
I had to take my sixth choice in Sorrento, because it books so far in advance. We stayed in a really expensive place on the cliff/water view, but I'd point out that some of the most distant, "group-tour" places on the hill may have periodic shuttles to downtown.
If you know the places you are going to visit, you could consider staying in a town or two before Sorrento, on the Circumvesuviana, but that just means even more choices. I only mean that Sorrento is a pleasant resort, but it has little history, landmarks, or beaches! We loved the bus ride up to Sant'Agata and the loooong (fully paved) walk down. There are some hotel options up there, quite far. Unlike the bus to Positano, you can get on the first one that comes in front of the Circumvesuviana Station, instead of waiting for two or more, in a massive line. Tickets sold at the newsstand in the station.
Fyi to get to ferry dock is a easy walk down from sorrento plaza but steep street and with stairs.
But then the way up might be worth a taxi back to your hotel.
In March I stayed at the Hotel Deseree, , very reasonably priced ( well under €100 per night). No, it is not a high end hotel, but it was very clean, the owners and staff were extremely nice and helpful, a nice room, the view from the balcony was lovely, breakfast was filling, and it is a beautiful walk to town and back. If you have a car there is free parking, plus elevator to their beach, and a roof top sun deck. I would certainly go back again.
Patricia,
I was also going to suggest Hotel Desiree as it should be well within your budget range, and as the previous reply mentioned the owners are wonderful and they have a fantastic rooftop terrace where you can enjoy some Vino in the afternoon sun. The hotel is a bit older, but I found it to be very clean and comfortable. It's at the far end of town, so will involve a bit of a walk to the station (~10-15 minutes), but it's not difficult at all. As I recall, it shares a beach with the more upscale Hotel Tonnarella next door.
If you'd like to consider another option, have a look at Hotel Il NIdo which is on the hill above the town. It's not within walking distance to town, but they provide a frequent free shuttle, so access is not a problem. As you'll see from their website, the views from the hotel are spectacular.
Hotel Dèsirèe is a great location. Easy walk to town. And easy to take bus back since it's uphill. You can easily take a bus to or from the boat docks.. no need for a taxi. We've stayed at Hotel La Tonnarella next to Hotel Dèsirèe 3 times, and love it, but it's above 150 euro. Check out Il Nido... many people love it and they have a shuttle. (Wrote this before seeing Ken's post).
We absolutely love Sorrento and highly recommend it. It's charming and fun. And it's the perfect hub/base for going every where you'll want to go.
I agonized over every posting on hotels in Sorrento ! And the suggestions above are good ones !
We decided to stay at Hotel Minerva and LOVED it ! You can easily walk into town, the terrace was expansive, the breakfasts were sumptuous, and they were incredibly helpful - we planned to take the bus to the harbor one morning to save a few steps and the guy at the front desk walked us out and showed us the exact spot to wait so we wouldn't get the bus mixed up with the Amalfi Coast buses.
We were more than impressed and would stay here again in a heartbeat !
Thank you all for your insight ! I might have to splurge a little on this one. How often do you get to spend a week in Sorrento right ?!!
We stayed at the Hotel Mignon in 2010. Right off the main street, center of the town. Easy walking to everything. Had a balcony and and was only 90Euros, including breakfast and taxes. Might have gone up by now, but worth the look. No water or harbor views, but clean, roomy and central location.
