Pensione Guerrato - Venice

Based on forum recommendations I just booked a room at the Pensione Guerrato in Venice for three nights in September (with the Rick Steves cash discount). The only room they had available has a wash basin in the room, but the shower and toilet down the hall. Heard about it in Rick's DVDs but never encountered it on previous trips. A good friend told me that it's no big deal and worth that small inconvenience to stay in this particular hotel. After three family trips I am finally traveling alone so I'm not as picky about my accommodations as before, but I thought I'd ask if anyone has stayed in a room like this at Pensione Guerrato. New adventures..... Thanks.

Jim,

I had a room like that at Albergo Doni (also in Venice) and I don't recall any particular problems with that arrangement. I haven't stayed at Pensione Guerrato but I'm assuming it will be similar. If that's the only room that's available, I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

Is it your private shower/toilet or is it one that's shared by another room? I've seen both those situations. It's usually right next door to your room, or just a step across the hall. Not a big deal, esp. with a sink in your room. And the people at PG are wonderful. Trust their restaurant recommendations. They have a map they will give you that they can use to circle where things are in relation to PG.

Have a wonderful time.

I believe it is shared with three other rooms, but not sure. Guess if I need to go in the middle of the night I may find out. From what I hear and read on the forum the hotel and people who run it are worth a small inconvenience. They did say in their confirmation email that if there was a cancellation they would upgrade me to a room with a private bath, but I'm not holding my breath. I've never been to Venice and since I'm traveling alone I'm looking forward to exploring and having, as they say, all decisions being unanimous. Thanks for the comments and encouragement.

I have stayed there in one of the shared rooms on two different occasions with no problem. I would not hesitate to do so again. Of course, just be conscious of the fact that someone else may be waiting to shower and use the sink in your room for brushing your teeth, etc.

Jim, sounds like the room my wife and shared while in Venice. The room we had was just past the reception desk and the bath is just before the reception area. We chose the room because of our limited budget and it was a good deal, we had the least expensive room in the place. The breakfast was great and the staff was very friendly. If I were alone I would not hesitate to use the room again, it is narrow but the sink worked out well. My wife is a light sleeper and the person working the desk ws on the computer and she could hear it so she asked and they immediatly ceased whatever they were doing on the computer. You wont have a great view from rooms at PG but the location was good for us. The entry is down a narrow alley type passage (like much of Venice) but I always felt safe, no problem there. You are a short walk to the Rialto Bridge which makes it easy to get your bearings. I'd definately use PG and stay in the same room we had, no negative bath sharing issues for us. Enjoy the trip, wear your comfortable shoes!
