I just wanted to post on our recent to to Rome/Florence/Tuscany traveling with our Peanut allergic son (sorry this may be a bit long!) He is anaphylactic to peanuts and I honestly did not think it would be a problem in Italy, but....I had printed out allergy cards in Italian just in case to hand to waiters, etc. since we do not speak too much Italian.
Overall our experience was fantastic in that all of the servers were very understanding and seemed (with the help of the card) to take the allergy seriously. One thing we did not realize was that a lot of peanut oil is used in Italian restaurants as a way to stop the pasta cooking when the restaurant is cooking batches of pasta (this is how it was explained to us!) Fortunately my son loves pizza and since that was the safe option at most restaurants he ate a ton of it! The hardest part was finding gelato but after visiting a few different places we found a few he could eat. In Florence there were 2 places that were fantastic for Gelato and there was no worry with the allergy. The first was Amorino on Via del Corso (which is a chain and had all allergens listed) and the second was Gelateria della Passera across the River. They were both wonderful and deserve special shout-outs! Across the Gelateria della Passera was the restaurant Quattro Leoni which was wonderful about his allergy! Our next night was a stay at the Farmhouse Lupaia. I had contacted them before we arrived to let them know about his allergy. As the nearest town was 15 minutes away I was a bit nervous. There was no reason to fear, when we arrived after check in the the chef came and talked to me personally about the menu for the evening and assured me he had checked and there were no peanuts or cross-contamination issues. Phew! Our last evening was in Orvieto, Umbria and we dined at I Sette Consoli. The entire menu was labeled with every allergen listed plainly and our son was able to enjoy a wonderful dinner and also dessert (which is huge if you have any allergies!) Such an amazing country and he can't wait to go back!
So nice you had a great time! Italy is wonderful!
Interesting. We are in Rome now. My son is allergic to peanuts and hazelnuts. The only one I've been concerned with is the hazelnut allergy since they are pretty popular here and it is the worse of his two allergies. He's had no issues with being exposed to peanut oil.
I am taking my 10 year old son in June and am scared to death as he is allergic to all nuts. Can you please share what your cards said? That's a great idea. I would like to do the same. I'm hoping he can enjoy some gelato! :(
Keep in mind that allergies are just as common with the Europeans as Americans. So dealing with allergies is common. Our granddaughter is mildly allergic to peanuts and less so with others. Carry a card that says, "H...... is very allergic to ......., please let us know if any ....... are in anything that we order."
We have a severely peanut and tree nut allergic teen and we are traveling to Italy next month. We don’t usually worry about peanut oil here in the U.S. ( like chick fil A).... because it is processed so the protein is not present. Do you happen to know if we will be dealing with a different kind of peanut oil there? Thanks !
I am not sure how processed the peanut oil they are using is but my son prefers to be on the safe side! The printable cards are available through FARE and come in many different languages- https://www.foodallergy.org/life-food-allergies/managing-lifes-milestones/dining-out/food-allergy-chef-cards.
Thank you so much for the link to FARE cards. That will be extremely helpful. You’ve made one worried food allergy mama very happy. Grazie!
