Paying for Traffic Tickets

My recent experience may shed some light - - or maybe not - - on that notably murky subject of Italian traffic tickets and how to pay for them. I managed to incur not just one, but two penalties, when our gps was going crazy in the little town of Fasano (Puglia) last May. The first notice to arrive, from the cc company, dated Aug. 5, was for a ztl violation. The actual citation has not yet appeared.
The second, dated Sep.29 from the cc company, was for running a red light. The actual citation arrived this week with instructions for how to pay online by cc or bank transfer. I did so promptly, actually feeling relieved that it was so easy, and that now that was cleared up.
It seems that the two types of infractions fall into different categories - - who knows why - - and that one type gets outsourced for collection. I'll keep you posted on further developments.
Just a note to those who complain that they don't remember doing what they're accused of: I don't remember my misdemeanors, and I am especially careful about ztl's. However, I accept the cameras' evidence. As I said, I was distracted by the gps' bizarre instructions, which was running us in circles and may have caused me to miss some of the signs or signals.

yup, waiting for my ticket from Italy for driving up a bus lane in Florence ... which the in-car GPS showed as the route.

Thanks for posting this Rosalyn. It's so nice to see someone own up to the infractions even if they don't remember or agree with them. Usually posters are looking for a way NOT to pay them.

it's one of the costs of travel, like overpaying for meals and taxis, part of the experience

The city of Venice has radar cameras on the causeway going from Mestre over to Venice, and they hit me @ 1.2 mph over a very slow speed limit of about 35 mph. They wanted paid in Euros wire transferred directly into their checking account.
There are European online payment services that wire transfer $ and charge your Visa account--for a fair price.

Just take a breath and make sure the claim is legit and it's being paid to the proper authority.

Jim.
I'm not sure you will receive that ticket for driving on the bus lane in Florence. Unless the municipal police had an officer around who took your plate number, I don't think there are too many (if any) bus lanes that are enforced by cameras in Florence. Pretty much only ZTL entry points and autovelox (speed) machines are equipped with cameras in Florence.

We've gotten a one or two tickets in Italy and got them in the mail way after our return home. My husband just paid online. Talk about the GPS going crazy, we were trying to get to the archaeological museum in Bolzano this past Sept. We had been there before some years prior but couldn't remember how to get there. The GPS took is zig-zag and in circles. We just could not find our way there. Well, before we knew it, the instructions had us IN the old city where a huge farmer's market was taking place. So there we were, inching our way through the crowds and could not turn right or left because the little side streets also had vendors. It seemed an eternity to get to the other end where it dropped us at the entrance of the museum. Wondering if we'll be receiving a ticket.
