Paying cash up front for apartment in Rome - is this how it's done?

In January we saw a listing on VRBO for apartments to rent, my husband and I thought this would be our best bet since we are staying in Rome for 8 days (first time in Rome). We found a listing we liked and corresponded with a women named Paola by phone and email over the last few months to rent the apartment in Rome. We gave a deposit via PayPal a few months ago. She has been very responsive and anytime I call her I have been able to reach her. However, we are set to arrive in Rome next week and she's asked for full amount to be paid on arrival. She said either use Paypal or cash. We are having problems using PayPal and we just feel a little weary paying the cash with no record of transaction (she does not take credit cards). Is this how it's done? Has anyone else had a similar experience? (The reviews were all favorable for the listing of the apartment). Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

That is typical of how it is done. You get a chance to see the apartment and then you pay. And often it is cash only which is why there are many discussions here on to obtain a wad of Euro the first day you arrive. I am sure she will give you a receipt. When did you expect to pay her?

It is perfectly routine. We have done this several times, in Italy and Spain. She will definitely give you a receipt and also will need to take your passport information to give to the authorities.

Even when we rent condos or apartments in the US "owner direct" we pay in full in advance.

I have rented four apartments in Italy and am renting two more this summer. Deposit was paid in advance and the balance at the apartment in cash.
I have always received a receipt that has been written up in a receipt booklet and records the amount paid, my name, dates of stay etc. They have a copy and I get the top one.

I think having an account to accept credit cards seems not an easy or affordable set up for individual apartment owners.
I think you are in good shape, she has been responsive to your emails and has received great reviews.

This is totally normal...we rented an apartment through VRBO a couple of years ago and gave a deposit and then paid upon arrival. Don't even think twice about it!

Agreed that paying cash on arrival is normal in Europe, not just Italy.

I am using Air bnb for the first time, and have booked two apartments-- one in Amsterdam and one in Venice, each for a full week, and yes, we paid up front. I know it feels weird and then we have to meet the person with the key upon arrival.
