pay as you go phones in italy

i am meeting up with friends and will need to be able to call them. we will be in italy for 17 days. should i rent a phone from verizon in the states or get a pay as you go phone when i get off the plane? exactly how, where, when does one do that? thanks

No clue about pay as you go.

Verizon has a global phone you can get for a very good (IMO) price. You keep your normal cell number, which I think is convenient.
