I am going on a RS tour in May and have heard how crowded the Vatican tours are. I have been offered to become a patron of the Vatican and taking advantage of the private tours they offer. Has anyone done this? I am not sure if this will fit into my schedule and if I will be just as happy taking the RS tour.

Is this offer a membership, or a one-visit gift? The annual membership is $600. For about $100 or so, you can book a small-group, early-entrance tour.
Unless the membership gets you in when the museums are otherwise closed to the public, you will encounter crowds anytime after 9:00am.
