Path of the Gods and other hikes from town of Amalfi.

Hello, my wife and I will be staying in the town of Amalfi for several days in early Oct 2019. We are not young (early 60's) but healthy and physically fit and enjoy moderate to occasional difficult hiking. (we are not mountain climbers) We are looking for advice, shared experience, tips on bus schedules, websites, trailheads, etc., on the following:

1- Hiking "Path of the Gods" from Bomerano to Nocelle. Getting to Bomerano from Amalfi by bus. Getting from Nocelle to Positano by bus.

2- Hiking from Ravello back to Amalfi through Atrani.

3- Hiking/walking from Amalfi to Pontone and back with detour along Torre dello Ziro.

Thank you.

Only did #2 and it was fairly simple - now, this was 5 yrs ago and my mom came with us, and she would have been 67 at the time (and I was 40-ish...lol). She walks A LOT. We also were there early Sept and stupidly waited until after lunch, when it was quite warm. Early Oct should be a little less hot and humid. There were places to stop and rest, but this is the only time I've ever had my legs tremble when I finished a hike - lots of stairs. It is a lovely, relatively easy hike - the views were so great. Make sure you take a full bottle of water - looking at my notes I did mention there were places to fill along the way. I think they say the walk is generally 30 min or so, but I think we took about 50-60 min.

Four of us, over 70 folk, did the Ravello to Amalfi walk about 10 days ago. From the Piazza Centrale, head Northwest along the Via della Marra and go past La Vecchia Cantina. You will see stairs on the left side of the road. The start isn't well marked, but I think there is a small plaque that says "Amalfi". We felt it was a very scenic walk and were glad we did it. Take the bus from Amalfi to Ravello and you are good to go, but don't forget to explore Ravello. The views from Villa Cimbroni were spectacular. The walk does take an hour and winds up on the main road in Amalfi, just below the paper museum. It will likely be quite hot, so be sure to take water. There are no shops or places to get anything along the way.

I should just copypasta this, but I’m here to wave you off Path of the Gods. It’s harder than most people expect. There’s some sections that require pretty vertical rocky scrambling. A lot of it is rocky, and exposed to the sun. I’m 40 years old, felt pretty prepared (decent shoes and plenty of water) and this trail took it out of me quite a bit. You do this hike for the views, and they are spectacular... but there’s not many views on the Amalfi Coast that AREN’T spectacular. You get the same amazing views in Ravello... while you have a drink or eat lunch. Other than the views I found the actual trail kind of uninteresting. It just has a super sexy name. It’s not that it’s terrible, it’s just that you’ll be wearing yourself out and trading off something else to spend a day doing this. Imho, it’s not worth it.

An alternative suggestion: take the bus to the upper bus stop above Positano, then hike down. You’ll get a unique experience of Positano that other tourists don’t see. It’s literally the only place in Italy where everyone said “Buongiorno” as I walked by.

We enjoyed the shady walk up the canyon from Amalfi very much. Didn't make it all the way to Pontone, but we'll use the excuse that we're early 70s!

We did both 1& 2. You have very clear directions for 2 so will focus on 1.

We did this hike a couple years ago in our late 50s and we did no rock scrambling or the like. I also did not think it was that hard-as long as you avoid walking down to positano. There is at the beginning a choice between upper and lower trail. We choose upper.

We bought tickets in Amalfi to Bomerano. There were a number of hikers and we all studied the map at the beginning. There is a dividing point to trail pretty early on and we choose upper as I said.

Best piece of advice I can give you is to buy bus tickets to positano in the little store on the left hand side as you exit the trail in Novelle. We also bought ice cream bars! We then waited awhile on a bench for a bus but much better than doing all those steps down to positano. The bus leaves you off in the center of town and we walked down to the water and took a ferry back to Amalfi. That was very nice/much better than another bus!

Thank you both for your perspectives on the Paths of the Gods hike. Your input will be helpful as we plan ahead. Please keep the experiences and advice coming, and in the end, we will let you know what we end up doing and how it all goes. LF

The Path of Gods was spectacular! We did it with a guide and had a group of 8. Mixed ages---late 20's to early 60's(me). I had no problem with the trail. Some loose stones-gravel at places so be careful of your step. We started the hike around 9 in the morning in Oct. Weather was perfect.

Our guide actually picked us up at our hotel and drove us to Bomerano to meet the rest of our group. We caught a bus back which was very easy. The stop was just around the corner from where the trail ended.

We did not get to do any of the other hike's but don't let anyone tell you the views aren't worth it. By far the highlight of our trip. This was my third trip to Italy.

If you want our guide's name please message me. She has a great Facebook site which can show alot of the hikes available.

I also enjoyed the Path of the Gods. I did in 2014 as an out-of-shape guy in his early 40's. I was staying at Nocelle, so actually did a loop hike -- upper trail out, lower trail back. I recall one very short area of mild scrambling over rock on the lower path but none on the upper path.

I’m 73
Did it by myself last year.
Follow advice of BethFl.
Do #1
Definitely bus down into Positano and ferry back to Amalfi.
Take the early (7:05?) bus to Borromeo.
It’s a very pleasant, not difficult, 3+ hour walk.
I stayed in Atrani.
My mistake was believing the hype that it was a difficult 5-hour hike. So I kept a quick pace. Not at all.
Bring snacks and stop, sit on rocks or the patio tables and enjoy the glorious view.
I would go back is a heartbeat and do it again. Absolute bliss. Enjoy.
