Passport renewal needed

Just decided to go. Leave 10/2. 10/15. Passport expires March 2012. Has anyone had problems with the 6 month rule?

you have time to renew before you go. Why take a chance?

You're not going to have a problem, but if it's gnawing at you, once you're insided two weeks you can make an appointment at the Dallas Passport Agency, drive up, and get one while you wait.

Thanks. We're flying in and out of Frankfurt and traveling in France and Italy. So far, the German Consulate says that they no longer enforce such a rule. No answer from Italy and France as yet. But......being a rule obeyer by nature, I'll call the Houston Passport office, take my plane ticket and spend the day with them to get a shazam renewal.

Thank you for responding and thank you for the site reference. I'm legal. The U.S. Embassy website tells me that for all 25 Schengen Agreement Countries, the requirement is for a valid passport extending THREE months beyond the return date. Yippee.

I just decided to go with my sister to Rome as her daughter is studying there for the semester and we are leaving October 13. My passport was due to expire in early March 2012 so I quickly sent in renewal forms a few days ago as just wanted to be safe. I did not pay extra to have it expedited as my college age son renewed his passport this past March for our June 2011 trip to Poland and it arrived in less than two weeks. I am hoping mine will do the same. If not I guess I can always pay the extra fee to have it expedited. From recent experiences how long have renewals been taking?

@Janet, we expeditedtwo of our renewals: sent in all the forms and the extra $60 on August 22 and received one back Saturday. Expect the other one will arrive tomorrow or Wednesday. Our teens had to renew in person. One visited the post office in early June and that one passport took 3 weeks. The other kiddo appeared at the post office in early July. I followed the renewal procedure online and finally called to check as the status had not changed. Result was we had that passport in less than 3 weeks without the expedition fee.
