For how long does the passport needs to be effective? 3 months, 6 months?
I just renew my passport and planning to go to Italy by June 20

The requirement is your passport must be not expiring for 6 months when traveling.
if you just renewed your passport, it could be 1 day old and will be perfectly fine, there is no rule on how old your passport must be.
Must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen area

The Schengen requirement is only 3 months after the planned departure date. Some countries may require 6 months validity following the date of entry.

It does seem to state 3 months, some sites I have seen list 6 months.
Many countries are 6
Either way, the OP seems to more concerned with the passport issue date than expiration and there is no stated requirement for that. The day you receive your US passport in your hands you can travel to Italy.

The day your renewed passport is issued it will be valid for another 10 years. You have nothing to worry about until 2025.
