The latest requirements for United States passport to travel to Italy.
I think I'm missing the question here.....
From the Italian Consulate website:
"Passport (and copy of relevant pages) or travel document valid three months over the planned stay in Italy. Passports issued more than 10 years before the dates of travel cannot be accepted. Passports must have at least two empty ‘visa’ pages"
The passport also needs to have at least 6 months before it expires. This may be a US Rule.
It's three months for the entire Schengen Zone. The US govt. has no say in it.
Admittedly, this is not a 2016 post, but it indicates that "six months" is no myth:
The six vs three month discussion is much like the white tennis shoe discussion. If going to Italy, Italy determine the acceptability of your passport not the US govt. The six month recommendation is out of the "abundance of caution" by the US is to cover all bases. The big issue is about having extra time on the passport is to prevent someone from having an expired passport should an accident or illness delay their departure from the country. It is just good practice to have an extra six months. Most of the time you could get by with closer to three months.
