Parma vs Modena as Home Base?

My wife and I want to visit both Parma and Modena next September. We are not sure which of the two to use as a home base for three days. We most enjoy smaller, beautiful, and walkable towns. Could anyone advise us as to which of the two to use as a home base? Thank you!

Hi Ray, I have stayed in both of these cities. Recently when I was in Modena, I was talking with a couple who used it as a base for two weeks and were happy about their choice. It’s the smaller of the two and has a fantastic food market! A balsamic vinegar tour was excellent out in the countryside, and I liked their historic museum and center piazza.

I’m not sure how small you’re thinking. For three days, I would rather stay in Parma - just because there’s more to see walking around. Parma also has one of my favorite church interiors in Italy with the warm-toned frescoes lining the main aisle & ceiling. Also, I like eating at La Forchetta. I have stayed in Parma multiple times, but I think one time in Modena was fine for me.

Both towns are wonderful with a gentleness you'll love. I'd choose Parma as I liked its historic attractions a bit more and the Antelami sculptures are irresistible. If you'll have day trips in mind, I think Parma has more short trips available such as Fontanellato, Fidenza, Castell'Arquato, Torrechiara Castle.
