Parma

We are thinking about adding Parma to our list of cities to visit. We train in from La Spezia. Is there decent lodging close to train station? Is a tour of the cheese factory(s) adviseable. We will be hitting there on my 59th birthday. Would Verona be a better choice for a stay?

Verona and Parma are both worth a visit. If you had to pick only one, the Michelin Guide gives Verona *** (highly recommended) and Parma ** (recommended). But if you're more interested in food, Parma is considered a culinary center with its parmesan cheese and dry-cured ham. From La Spezia you'd get to Parma first, Verona is closer to Venice.

We will be hitting Bologna-Modena-Parma for a few days on the tailend of our trip to Turkey in mid-Oct. Flying into Bologna and renting a car. We are staying at Azienda Agricola Il Gaidello, a agriturist farm, in Castelfranco Emilia outside of Modena. While we want to be somewhat laid back, we will use our car to tour the surrounding region. Haven't ever stayed at Il Gaidello, but a friend of ours who guides groups thinks we'll like it and it's web site makes the accomodations appealing.

LOVED Parma!!!! The food is amazing and the city is full of some of the best church art in Italy. Most people ride bikes, the shopping is fantastic. Go the cheese factory, you will love it and load up on prosciutto di Parma, its amazing!
