Parma

I am traveling to Italy in April--- I fly into Milan and will be taking a train straight to Parma. I have a food tour booked for the next day, but have the entire first day free. Any recommendations for things to do in Parma or should I leave Parma for the day and visit somewhere else? Also, any hotel or restaurant recommendations in Parma?

Thanks!

Are you talking about the day you arrive from NYC? Most of us resemble the walking dead on Day 1 and do not pre-book anything that involves payment. Museums are particularly ill-advised on that first day. I'd research Parma's sights on the off-chance I was actually awake after dropping off my luggage, but I would expect basically just to wander around outdoors, trying to stay awake. Perhaps there's a walking tour you could arrange after arrival?

I think you're highly unlikely to want to get on another train and go elsewhere on your arrival day.

What time do you plan to arrive in Parma? The Trenitalia.com site shows that the train from MXP to Milano Centrale takes about an hour, then it's about two hours by train to Parma (including some waiting time to transfer trains).

You would have time for the Duomo and Baptistry, and perhaps some nearby streets, and a nice lunch or dinner.

I think going outside of Parma might be a stretch.

Hi, I suggest the hotel Stendahl Mercure(sp) which is where I normally stay when coming to Parma. It's about a 10 minute walk from the train station. Once you check in, go out the front door, turn left and then take the first right and walk another 10-15 minutes to st. G. Mazzini, turn left,go to the first square, go right, and you'll be headed to Str.Luigi Carlo Farini and pick your bar or restuarant--most open after 8. Great food, and great company(if you wish) available.
I'll be there for my annual visit the end of May.
