Planning a trip to Matera and I know we cannot bring the car in. We will have to leave it in another spot and then get ourselves and
luggage to Matera. Has anyone had any experience with this? Also would like to stay close by lot or near Matera the first night, suggestions on that as well. Thank you.
Who says you cannot bring the car into Matera?
The Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) is only in the historical center. The map is below.

If you tell us where your accommodations are we can suggest the best parking, or maybe your accommodations (host or hotelier) can suggest a place. The above site has also some parking suggestions. See below,

Hi I am asking for my friend. She does not know where she is staying yet. Thinking somewhere in Sassi Districts. They were planning to arrive and it is a 5 hour flight. Stay somewhere close to there and head there the next day. Needing suggestions for all of this.
Can you help with this?
We stayed in Matera, in Sassi, while we didn't have a car, the parking lot was just a few minutes walking away.
We used a parking ramp up the hill and a couple blocks from the historical area.
Here's an example of parking instructions from one hotel in the Sassi:

They are coming from where? Bari? Brindisi? Rome?
And why stop outside Matera to spend the first night and not go directly to their accommodations?
First they need to select their accommodations in the Sassi (if they want to stay in the Sassi), then one selects the parking closest to the accommodations. The Sassi area is closed to non residents’ traffic, and some accommodations are simply not accessible except by foot.
Below are some car parks, I parked in Piazza Firrao, but there are several surrounding the perimeter of the Sassi area, that is why it is best to choose the accommodations first then the parking. Some accommodations may have parking as well, if one searches for that option, however I doubt you can find those inside the Sassi proper.

We stayed in the Sassi for several nights and it was difficult to find parking. The lots recommended to us were full and we had to use street parking and then later were able to get into a parking area. Absolutely loved Matera.
Your hotel will give you instructions on where to park after you book.
Some hotels have a shuttle from parking garage to the hotel.
