We ae looking to go to Bergamo for the day and will have a car. Any ideas on where to park outside the ZTL zone where we can walk either to the funicular or to citta alta? Thanks
Hi, I just took a taxi from the train station up into the Citta Alta, so I can’t comment on the ZTL zones, but I think there was a parking lot at the train station. I am replying to let you know that you might just want to take a taxi if you have to park in the lower part of the city because the funicular line can get backed up. The funicular is fairly small. The taxi will take you up into the main piazza in Citta Alta. I think it was 15€.
I parked close to the railway station. Couldn't go much further on the day we went, the lower part of town was very busy due to some cycle race. About a twenty minute walk to the funicular, or an extra ten minutes if you decide to walk up into Città Alta.
If you can manage it, there is a nice rock garden above the old town. A bit further up there is a second funicular on one side, a couple of swanky restaurants on the other with good views. There is also considerable parking up there, but I don't know if that is available for everyone: it can be reached by using roads running around the exterior of Città Alta.
Did you check Bergamo's ZTL map on www.accessibilitàcentristorici.it? You can zoom in and look for the P (for parking) outside the ZTL.
Yes you can park by the station, but for Alta do not walk up and take the funicular. Buy funicular/bus tickets in the station and take Bus 1, Alta. On the way up the hill you will pass the funicular on the left which goes to the bottom of Alta; you get off at the top. Across the street is a free funicular going further up to a little park and some nice views.
Work your way down through Alta and take the funicular back. You can walk to the station, or a bus from the next stop.
