We are driving from Rome to Venice, stopping along the way to do some sightseeing. We want to know of some safe parking garages in the Venice area. We know about the places mentioned in Rick Steves' book but he doesn't go into much detail about the one on the mainland, the one by the train station. Any details known, or any other suggestions?
Not sure why you are not going by train, or at least why you are not returning the rental car upon arrival in Venice, but these are the two garages in front of the Venezia Mestre station.

parking was super easy and very cheap at the Tronchetto, $21 Euro a day! Don't let all the driving haters on this board dissuade you from a 4 wheel adventure in Italy!
Amen dantbarnes! I love driving in Italy
Parking is very easy in Venice. If I recall correctly, we parked in a garage called ironically San Marco, walked across the street and took the Tragetto/ferry to the actual San Marco Square. I can't remember the cost, but it was reasonable and convenient. Just rake the road as far as you can and there are 2 or 3 very large garages. Don't leave anything in the car, as you have to give them the keys. I would avoid a weekend, as we went on a weekend in October when they were running the Venice Marathon and it was wall to wall people.

I'm one of those who is not a driving hater, and actually always has a car in Italy every minute I'm there (every year), including in scary ZTL infested Florence, however in most cases it is a good idea to do Venice before or after the car rental period.
That is because the only 4 wheel adventure you can have in Venice is with this car
