Can someone offer specific directions to the free parking lot Pietrasantina in Pisa which Rick suggested. I'll be coming from Florence. Thank you.
Exit the A11 freeway at Migliarino (freeway end) after the toll plaza (go straight after the toll plaza), then follow the directions to Pisa Centro (turn left on the SS1 via Aurelia).
Eventually the SS1 swings to the right at a roundabout. You go to the left, around the roundabout and follow the directions to PISA CENTRO (symbol of the Target logo). That street becomes via Pietrasantina, when it goes under the underpass under the railroad you are close. The parking lot is on the right. Park and walk to the tower across the street (through the city gate).
Here are the directions from p. 593 of the 2014 Italy book. You may also want to print out a map from Google, or the Pisa Tourist Office, in addition to other driving maps you will have.
"To reach the parking lot, exit the autostrada at Pisa Nord and follow signs to Pisa (on the left). Pass the second traffic light and turn left toward the city center. Go straight, following the Bus Parking signs, until you see the gas station. The parking lot is on the left."
The parking lot behind the gas station on via Pietrasantina is the Parcheggio Scambiatore, used mainly by tourist buses. You are at least one km away from the Piazza Duomo and it's a long walk. Just drive further up passed the underpass. The one further down the road, on the right is right there across the street from the tower. I always park there. It's called Parcheggio Cammeo located at Via Cammeo Carlo Salomone, 51. It's only 2 euro/hour. Here is the website:

That website is in Italian though.
Maureen. Do you park only in parking lots that have the website in English?
The address is the same in both languages:
Via Cammeo Carlo Salomone 51
Maureen, you can learn many of the basics of Italian in a week by studying an hour a day with a textbook. This will enhance your trip greatly as you'll find you can figure out the gist of many signs using root words you already know.
Below is a link in English on parking in Siena and Pisa.

Roberto,
thanks for your reply. Is Parcheggio Cammeo inside the ZTL. We would be coming down the A12 to SS1 to via Pietrasantina.
No. It's outside the city walls (outside the ZTL). It's really convenient, just across the city wall gate from the Piazza dei Miracoli. It's next to the Mensa Universitaria (University Cafeteria), maybe you can get a cheap lunch too, I don't know if they use the university coupons like they used to do at the University of Florence or if it's open to all.
