My husband and I will be renting a car for a week to drive around Tuscany, then spending two nights in Rome before driving to visit family near Naples. We won't need our car in Rome, but it is cheaper for us to keep the car during our 2 nights in Rome, rather than doing two separate rentals before and after Rome. So my question is....Is there any free, safe parking in or around Rome? We will be staying not far from the Termini station, so we could park outside Rome and take the train in if thats possible? Any parking suggestions would be great! Thanks.
long term parking at the Rome airport might be an option, then train into the city. This would also keep you out of Rome traffic.
There are parking garages all around Termini. Come down the eastern side of the beltway and cut into town on the A24 and you'll hit the station with just a couple of turns and avoid all the mess. If you're looking at a map, turn left at the cemetery and right just past the Porta Maggorie mtro station and head northwest. You'll be parked fifteen minutes after turning off the freeway.
They won't be free though. Doubt you would find that. Even hotels will charge their guests for parking. We paid 10euro a day which wasn'tall that bad.
Heck no, they won't be free. I figure twenty-five to thirty euro per day for parking in major cities.
Thank you for the info! If it's going to cost us that much to park, it might not be cheaper to keep the car after all. Since we won't be driving in Rome either way, I'm thinking two separate rentals might be our best option. Thanks!
I'd suggest checking with your hotel first to see what they'll charge you for parking. If it's only a few euro it might be worth it just to avoid the hassle of turning in and getting another rental two days later.
We did find that the hotels in Naples were cheap or even free (in Caserta) for the parking.
Stephanie, part of what you might also consider, beyond the parking charges, is also the insurance charges per day. It may be less expensive to drop your car off... and perhaps then get another if you feel you still need a car. Depending on which route you take, here are some parking options in Rome. Near Roma Termini there is a large garage on Via Marsala (north side), another on Via Giolitti (south side), and a "parking lot" in front of the Train Station. The link above has a map and a list of 200+ parking options in Rome. Of course, you can always hope to find a white-lined space... which is FREE! Good Luck!
