Parking in Milan & Pisa

Hello,

We are a family of 6 adults and my mother uses a wheelchair.

We are going to rent a 7-seater minivan from Zurich and going to drive to Milan for a day, then, going to Pisa the next day. (to mainly see the Leaning Tower of Pisa).

I understand it's challenging to find parking in both Milan and Pisa, but, wanted to know if folks had any tips or advise on finding parking. We haven't booked hotels yet at either of these places, but, can do what works parking-wise.

Any input or suggestions will be highly appreciated!

Thanks,
Kalindi

More than finding parking, you have to be aware of driving restrictions in Milan.
The are ZTL, which are restricted areas where you cannot drive, or will receive a fine. And depending on the day, Area C is a congestion measure, so you would have to pay to enter the area. Your best choice is to leave the car in a parking lot in the outskirts of the city, and take the metro from there.

Metro could be a problem with the wheelchair-is there a lift in both stations?

Think to Milan as being built in concentrical circles like a bull's eye. Roughly speaking, there are three main circles around the center. The inner circle (navigli, as it was built by covering channels) is the very center of the city. The intermediate circle are the former city walls (bastioni). Area C is, more or less, the area within the intermediate circle, in order to drive there you have to pay 5 euros per day. Your license plate is photographed when you enter and if you do not pay within a fixed time a fine is issued.

Most of the parking places between the first and the third (outer) circle are reserved to residents. Since one year, the municipal administration is quietly transforming places say, a km. or two outside the outer circle in paid places, at least in morning hours, in order to convince residents of nearby towns to travel with trains and buses instead of parking near the outer circle. These paid places are a bit strange as there are no parking meters but you have to buy prepaid cards or pay online with an app. But the result is that only places in the extreme peripheries are free to park.
