Are there safe parking lots in Mestre to park our rental car while we stay in Venice for three nights? Or would it be better to reserve a hotel in Mestre where we could keep better watch on our car? Anyone out there had experience with this?

By all means stay in Venice.Park in Mestre.As mentioned the covered lot is across from the station and inexpensive.Trains run every 5 minutes into Venice.Venice is magic at night dont miss it.jack

We took Rick's advice and parked in the secure garage across from the train station in Mestre.
We felt our car was safe and it was an easy walk across and a short train ride into Venice.
We parked for 3 days and the cost was 15 Euros.

I think it depends on your comfort level. When I do not have a car I stay in Venice when I have a rental car I stay at Hotel Novotel in Mestre that has both secured and unsecured parking and take their shuttle into Venice.No question Venice is magic early AM and at night but break ins are always a concern in Italy.
Realize also it costs alot more to stay in an equivalent hotel in Venice than Mestre.

As per previous posts, we parked at the covered lot in Mestre, left car for 3 nights in Venice. No problems with the lot or car; wouldn't miss staying in Venice at night.
