I know rental cars are not allowed in the town but does anyone know if there is overnight parking for free anywhere. We will be there for 3 nights. Thanks

No free parking that I know of (nothing is free in Italy). It will cost you about 20 Euro to park in a garage overnight. Be sure not to drive into the ZTL (limited traffic zone). You will be fined heavily. See other posts about the infamous ZTL. You will not need a car if you are staying in Florence the whole time. If you are taking day trips out of Florence, I suggest that you rent from the Airport (outside the ZTL) and leave from there, returning the car at the end of the day.
