Assuming this is a rental car

Will you actually need the car in Rome?
Why not just return the car in Florence?

A car is not needed nor recommended in Rome or Florence. Unless you plan to visit the countryside of Tuscany in between, it is much easier to take the high speed train between Rome and Florence. The same is true going back to Rome. You don’t need a car. Even if you used the car to roam around Tuscany on the way from Rome to Florence, once in Florence return the rental car. Then after visiting Florence take the train back to Rome.

I agree with Roberto about not needing a car in Florence or Rome, and to take the train from Florence to Rome. Much less stressful. However, if you do need the car for some reason, you can always ask your hotel to recommend a parking garage or parking lot.

I should have been more specific. It will not be a rental but an Italian residents car. There is a parking lot and tram stop called Villa Costanza. Has anyone used this to get into the city center?

When we stay in a villa in the Chianti region near San Gusme, we often drive up to Florence for the day and park at Villa Costanza. The parking lot is right off the A1 and is huge…it is hard to think it ever fills up. We buy our tram ticket at the machines outside the main building. When we have parked there, the trams are usually pretty crowded but I have usually always found a seat for the short trip into the SMN train station. It is a great option!
