Parking in Florence

We are driving a passenger van in Florence for a day of touring. Where is the best place to park in the historical area?

Be very careful as the city writes a massive number of tickets to those entering the center city ZTL. We didn't pick our rental car up until ready to leave town for the Tuscan countryside south of there.

As you may also be aware, each driver listed on the rental form will also require the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. Be very careful to avoid the dreaded ZTL (limited traffic) zones in Florence (mentioned in a previous reply), as each pass through one of the automated cameras will result in hefty fines, which you won't know about until several months after you get home.

My personal choice for a place near the historical area would be the underground parking at Piazza Beccaria. The centre is quite near and the walk pleasant. Access to the underground parking under the SMN station is quite slow at this time and other parking silos are more distant, this is my reason for the choice of the Beccaria parking.

There are some private parking in the very center that are of course closer, but they are expensive, you must stick carefully to their access itineraries and you must be careful that your license plate is entered in the ZTL white list or you will get an automated fine. As I am not confident that all this procedure is respected to the letter, I do not advice parking places within the ZTL.

Park as close as possible to a tramway stop in the outskirts and use public transit to get to the center. Parking and driving in historical Florence is (obviously) forbidden and unethical.

There are parking lots in Oltrarno just west of Florence city center across Ponte Vecchio bridge. They may be in ZTL.

Referencing the above link, use the Villa Costzana parking and use the tram to reach Florence. You will avoid all ZTLs and bus lanes, another high fines area

Do you know the dimensions of your passenger van? Some enclosed parking garages have height limitations and spaces can be quite small.
