Parking in Cortona, Italy

We will be arriving in Cortona well after dark. We are staying with friends in a rented villa near the Convent (Church) of San Francesco. I am asking, where is the best place to park? I understand there is a public lot near Piazza Garibaldi with an elevator? Is that the best option? Can we get into the lot as late, as perhaps midnight? Thank you very much for any help. --Cathy

Thank you, Roberto. Do you know if we can enter any lot at any time of day? Are any of these lots free?

Cathy, As I recall, the car park along Viale Battisti (just below Piazza Garibaldi) is free. I didn't see any gates on it, so I'm assuming it's open 24-hours. That particular lot doesn't have Elevators, but rather two Escalators (which may or may not be working). There are stairs or ramps alongside each Escalator. They exit right onto Piazza Garibaldi, near the Bus stop. It's an easy walk from there to Piazza della Repubblica and other parts of the city. Happy travels!

We were just in beautiful Cortona in May. There are parking lots along the outer walls. The escalator that leads to San Francesco was broken. Bring comfortable, supportive shoes...it is a steep hilltown, but worth it! Trattoria Dardano on Via Dardano was fabulous!! We went there 2 nights in a row and I would go back there in a heart beat.

Thank you, Marie. We'll try out your favorite trattoria for sure! Bummer about the escalator. I hope it's fixed by now, but I think I'll add my ugly but sensible shoes, just in case.--Cathy

Cathy, It's unfortunate that I can't post JPEG images here, as I could show you exactly what the parking lot and Escalators look like. They do have ZTL areas in the main part of town, so don't drive in that area.
