In looking through various sources, I'm seeing that parking costs about 25-30 Euros for the day. Is there any place to park near the city where you don't have to pay NYC parking rates?
Tom...don't tell any one, but off bia bruno bonci is a free parking lot...it is across a small valley from san domenico but very walkable. it is a hit and miss if you can find any parking there but we were able to find parking there for our overnight stays after returning from our days touring around. You can drive down from Viale Vittorio Veneto and then walk up the stairs at the end of the lot and around to viale dei mille to san domenico and beyond. With luggage, I just dropped off my wife and luggage at San Domenico and drove around to the parking lot and I walked back to meet her. I have also heard, though unconfirmed, that some sienese park overnight at the train station for 2 Euro per night. Don't know where at the station, though. I just heard from friend with whom we were staying this past April/May.
We'd need parking for a day trip to Siena. We're not staying there over night.

Bus service is available throughout Italy.
Gotta pay to play!
RS Italy 2010 book page 510 tells of one free parking lot west of the Fortezza and the stadium parking lot is 1.6E per hour-pay when you leave. Good maps too
If you go on market day, I think it is Wednesday, the parking lot by the Fortezza is usually full.
We have been to Siena a couple of times, and we always found free street parking on the road that leads to the Stadium. We even found parking there on market day. Our first visit we stayed 2 nights and parked on that street our whole visit (we drove the car during the day, but could always find parking when we returned) In 2008, we just dropped by for a few hours and parked in the same area. Follow the RS guidebook instructions for getting to the stadium area and then start looking for street parking.
We usually drive in from the south towards the Porto
Romano gate. Just before the vehicle exclusion zone there is metered parking on both sides of the road.
Only once could we not find a spot there.
Forget how much but not what you are talking about.
10 minute pleasant walk to the center of town.
We did very well using the parking recommendations in RS's Italy book. For Siena we parked at the Stadium parking lot.
- It is easy to find: just follow the signs with the soccer ball. * It's large enough so that it shouldn't be full when you get there. * It's only a very short walk to the old town centre* Not too expensive, about 1.50 Euro per hour. There is no place in downtown Calgary I can get such a cheap parking spot!
I found a good web site for a street map of Siena and you can zoom in or out and then print what ever size you like.

At bottom of this page you will find a Siena map from TuttoCitta.
Hope this helps.
